Feature Friday - Q&A with Janis Provisor Jewelry

This week's Feature Friday Q&A is with another amazing designer - Janis Provisor of Janis Provisor Jewelry!  Janis Provisor Jewelry features primarily one-of-a-kind pieces that combine stunning craftsmanship with artistic design.  These jewels have a sense of fun to them! They don´t take themselves too seriously at all!

So, sit back and have a little bit of fun with Janis Provisor!

Janis with her business partner, Debi Wisch.

1.  What prompted your passion for jewelry and jewelry design?
For most of my adult life my career centered around painting and art. However, I’ve always been fascinated with jewelry.  My mother has always been quite fashionable and I would guess that my initial interest stemmed from playing in her jewelry box; my version of playing in the sandbox.

Janis' studio - It does feel a bit like a sandbox.  What fun it would be to play here everyday!

2.  What is your favorite piece or collection?
My favorite piece of mine is a large oval dendritic agate ring set in 20 carat gold.  Large bold pieces appeal to me, particularly rings…the ‘feel’ of this ring on my finger is so satisfying and the I love looking at the natural landscape of the agate.

Janis' dendritic agate, andalusite & 20 kt gold, width measures 2 inches, $13,500.

3.  What would your perfect “jewelry day” involve / be like?
My perfect jewelry day is either working with my goldsmith in Bali or spending hours with gemstone dealers in Jaipur coming up with new ideas.

4.  Thus far, what would you say is your proudest jewelry moment or memory?
That’s not a sentiment that carries much weight for me, but I do like seeing strangers wearing my work…it’s a bit like being a voyeur.

This is one of my favorite pieces!  Charm with pavé amethyst, garnet, iolite & 20 kt gold, $15,000.

5.  Where do you find your greatest inspiration?
Nature, art, movies.

Green amethyst, cognac quartz & 20-22 kt gold, $11,400.

6.  In your personal wardrobe, do you find that you gravitate to one particular jewelry accessory (rings vs. necklace vs. bracelets vs. watches, etc.) more often than others?
I’m a creature of habit and tend to wear the same jewelry day in, day out.  I have a pair of gold hammered disk earrings that I wear every day plus a few rings.  Watches don’t make my heart beat faster but I do love earrings and rings.  Although, I would say that I’m known for making necklaces and I enjoy making them the most, I don’t wear them on a daily basis.

Moldavite, diamond & 22 kt gold, $32,250.

7.  When putting together an outfit, how do you feel about mixing metals, designs and even new with vintage pieces?
I’m a total mix-and-match kind of girl.  Old, new, silver and gold…I mix them and wear them all together.

Rutile quartz, brown diamond, 18-22 kt gold, $27,150.

8.  Layering seems to be a trend that is here to stay, for now. What are your feelings on the layered look?  How do you like layered necklaces with layered bracelets plus layered rings?
I love layering necklaces.  And, in fact, I’ve made many pieces that you can build on...wear one or several at the same time.  Stacked rings appeal to me, and in fact my wedding bands are all 4 pieces which I bought on different occasions but always wear as one.

Dendritic agate, red sapphire, tourmaline & 22 kt gold, $13,350.

9.  What advice would you give to budding jewelry designers? To budding fine jewelry collectors?
The advice I’d give to a budding jewelry designer is to learn the business end of it as well as the design end.  Take your time to find your voice.  Develop sources and artisans who can help you best realize your vision.  Ideas can come easy but the follow through is, like all things in life, what counts.

Clearly, anyone who is buying jewelry should buy what they love first and foremost!
